Selecting a Muralist, Canvas Murals versus Onsite Murals
Value is often a difficult attribute to assign to a product. However, when it comes to custom wall murals the value is best expressed thru the lines of a well know credit card commercial.
- Home Decorating Magazines: $45.00
- Online Art Print: $247.53
- Sketches of Your Wall Mural Idea: $425.00
- Custom Wall Mural of the Greek Mediterranean: $4995.00
- Creating a Home: Priceless
I can think of no other home decor item that can transform your house into a home more than a custom wall mural that includes aspects of yourself. Whether the mural is of a place you love to spend time or of a scene brought on by a moment of inspiration, the personal value assigned to wall murals is infinite. Even if your budget cannot afford a truly custom painted mural, there are print alternatives that can transform your home. The following questions allow you to examine the issue of cost as you search for a muralist to help create your personalized wall mural.
What is the artist's price for a custom painted wall mural?
The cost of a mural is most often calculated on a square foot or even square inch basis. (Conversion 1 square foot = 144 square inches) The actual cost for a mural can range widely depending on a number of factors:
- Reputation of the Muralist – If you are attempting to hire an experienced, well regarded muralist, expect to pay in the range of $60.00 to $120.00 per square foot. A less experienced muralist’s rate may start at $30.00 per square foot but quickly moves higher. If the costs seem high to you, remember that you are buying custom, original art from a highly skilled craftsmen. Art that not only you can enjoy, but your children’s children can someday enjoy. At the highest end of the pay scale, an experienced muralist may only be making $100.00 an hour for an amazing skill. Compare that to the rates lawyers receive which can quickly go to $200 or more an hour. This fee is charged because all too many of us are willing to pay to gain legal council. Which scenario would you derive more pleasure, spending hours on end receiving council from a lawyer or hours meditating on the beauty of your own custom mural? If you answered you would rather spend more time with your lawyer, then there is really nothing else I can say!!
- Availability – a muralist who is in high demand will often receive higher rates. The laws of supply and demand at work!
- Location – certain geographical locations are more likely to include custom murals in their home décor. This creates a higher demand and consequently higher costs. Personally, I think other areas of the country simply have not yet discovered the beauty of murals and their unique ability to transform a home.
- Medium Selected – Canvas murals often require additional charges; oil based paints will also require additional charges.
- Size and Detail of the Mural – the larger pieces will have a higher cost. Also, higher detail in a mural will result in higher cost.
- Travel Expenses - Your final cost may be impacted if you choose to bring a muralist to your location. Expect to pay in the range of $100.00 to $150.00 per day for travel expenses.
Because all of these factors can have an impact on the final price, be sure to get a complete quote from the muralists.
When can I receive a quote? What are the artist’s payment requirements?
Typically, a final quote will not be made available until after the initial sketches are completed. The sketches provide the muralist with a better idea how long the mural will take based on the amount of detail you desire.
Most muralists have similar payment requirements.
- A fee to secure the final sketches and quote
- 50% of the total final quoted price secures the date and your acceptance of the design.
- The remaining balance is due upon completion of the work.
