Decorating Child Rooms with Wall Murals

Child Room Decor can be Transformed by Child Murals

Decorating child rooms can be one of the most challenging yet rewarding experiences for parents and their children. I remember when I was a child. Each week it seemed I wanted to decorate in a different theme. One week it was Winnie the Pooh and the next it was Batman. I could not decide, so I often think how frustrating that must have been for my mother. Thanks mom for putting up with me!!

My Definition of a Child

This page looks at decorating child rooms and provides a number of child room decorating ideas. The age range I consider for this page are girls and boys between the ages of 3 to 8. This definition is fairly un-scientific although some child psychologists do group early childhood development into a similar age bracket. I will claim ignorance however and state that my age division comes from my own experience.

What do I mean by my own experience? I refer simply to my memory and the way my experiences have shaped me. For instance, think back to your earliest memories. When do they begin? For most of us they probably become consistent when we were two or three or even four. Memories earlier than this often are associated with some form of trauma.

For instance, I remember as a toddler sitting in the back seat of a family friends car staring intently at the rolled down window. I can't remember the exact reasoning that led me to my next action, but I believe the thought went something like this, "Hmmm, I wonder what that window would taste like??" A second later, chomp, my mouth is fully enclosed over the lip of the window. Unfortunately for me this was one of the early cars with electric windows. The driver of the car decided it was time to put the window up and like most sane adults they did't think it necessary to check for any 1 year old window attachments. Thankfully they heard my scream quite clearly and stopped the windows advance before permanent damage could be done. Needless to say the pain in my mouth helped to stamp that event forever on my mind.

This memory is one of only a few before I was 4. My personal memories become more frequent soon after my family's final move to Iowa back in the late 70's. From these memories and from research I've heard discussed, I've pieced together some interesting clues about early childhood development and want to relate them into the context of decorating child rooms.

Interesting Ideas about Early Childhood Development

The research I am referring to was a study done in England. The study had its basis in data that was gathered on a large group of children at several intervals from birth thru late adulthood. (If you're interested, information on the data collection and some of the research conducted on the data can be accessed from the Centre for Longitudinal Studies.) The study stated that for many adults their choice of career could be traced back to interests that were being expressed by their seventh birthday. When I heard this statement I was initially skeptical until I did the self-test. In my book, if a statement passes the self-test than it has a greater chance of being true.

The self-test goes like this, does the statement relate to my experience. If yes, then the statement is most likely true. Guess what I found, the self-test in the case of the British study held up to my self-test. When I reflect back to when I was seven, about second grade, I was daydreaming about science things and loved math. No wonder I ended up in engineering!! OK, maybe my self-test is not scientific but do your own self-test. Go back to first thru third grade and look at the subjects and interests you developed. Have you in some way pursued those interests? If not why? So back to our original question, how the heck does this apply to decorating child rooms?

Creating an Environment for Childhood Development

I think it has a lot to do with it. The study I just mentioned discusses that the first seven years for a child are their primary formative years. During this time their key interests will begin to be expressed. Depending on the outlets for children during this period, one or many of the interests can become prevelant interests throughout that child's life.

For me, my parents and teachers created an environment that allowed me to safely begin to express my interests in science and math and gain skills necessary to be successful in the long term. I remember when I was six or seven doing "science" reports. I would sit down with a volume of our family's outdated Encyclopedia Britannica and copy the section about the brain or some other scientific subjects. Diagrams and all would go into my report. This exercise reinforced my interest in science. My mother would also read with me regularly. Not books relating to science or math, actually books about places with a hundred acre wood or secret wardrobes that took small kids to a place called Narnia. This activity helped create an appetite for reading which has served me very well over the years as I've had to scour over engineering texts. But what if...

  • What if when I was a child I had a diagram of the human body placed on my wall?
  • What if I had a picture of rocket ships flying into a night sky on my ceiling with the constellations all mapped out?
  • What if your child has a picture of all their favorite animals with a veterinarian walking among the animals?
  • What if every night, before putting your son or daughter to bed you told them a new story, true or fictional, about the mysteries of the human body, or the mystery of space, or the way the vet saved the horse from an injury? What if?

The following child rooms decorating ideas are meant to provide a few ideas. The beauty of the decorating idea is in the way your child's imagination and interests will be heightened, not so much in the beauty of the fabric or paint. You can help encourage those interests by utilizing images thru wall murals.

One final note on the ideas. My initial plan was to separate the ideas by ideas for girls or boys. I realize that we should not position the ideas by sex, especially during these formative years. Some ideas may be more appropriate for one sex or another, but in general both boys and girls should be encouraged to dream about the wonders of the human body, the reaches of outer space, or the compassion of helping animals.

Wall Mural Childs Room Decorating Ideas

Decorating Childs Room with Murals Idea #1

The creation of a an undersea world for your childs room decor is not beyond your reach with the use of a child wall mural. Decorating a child room with a sea mural will also introduce various sea creatures like dolphins, whales, and tropical fish. These creatures can be complemented in your childs room accessories thru either stuffed animals or other child wall decor like posters of famous sea creatures, like Willy. The colors of this type of childs mural will also spark creativity in your child.  Help them express this creativity by creating "safe zones" on walls where your child can scribble with chalks. This can be done with special paints available on the market. Keep in mind that your child will need to be explained what the "safe zones" or "safe boxes" are for and don't be surprised if a few accidents occur outside the safe boxes. But don't fret, a little marker or chalk can easily be erased with a little fresh paint!

Decorating Childs Room with Murals Idea #2

What about creating a horse theme for your childs room theme? Decorating a child's room with horses can be accomplished quite well with horse murals. Imagine creating on one wall a mural that looks out over a rolling pasture. Appearing very close to the foreground of the scene, several horses stand waiting for riders. Have one horse painted with the saddle empty, awaiting a rider. Depending on whether you have a boy or a girl, the mural can take on either a western look or a classical look with yellows and even pinks to complement your little girls room decor. Either way a horse theme would make a great child room decor theme.
