Wall Murals for Decorating Kid Rooms

Decorating Kid Room with Kid Murals and Kid Wall Murals

My Definition of a Kid...

If you are just joining us, welcome. In this section of the site, I would like to explore decorating kid rooms with wall murals. I have categorized the Room Wall Murals section to make it easier to navigate. The categories are not only by room but also by age group in a particular bedroom. In this section, we are discussing kid rooms. A kid is defined as both girls and boys who range in age from nine to twelve.

You may be wondering, "Why did I select this age to define kids?" Two words tell you why, "Junior High!". Yes, that feared and yet dreamed about state that carries a child beyond "elementary" school and into "junior" high. Kids as they approach this age are visited by visions of organized athletics and school functions, cool after school get togethers the kids like to call parties, Mrs. Smith's 8th grade algebra, and of course an increased awareness of style and fashions. It is also during this period of a child's development that an awareness of their identity begins to surface and develop.

Keeping up With Style and Fashion

For almost all junior high kids, making some attempt at keeping up with the style and fashion of the day will play a key role in their developing identity. I must at this point admit that I was not the king of style in my junior high. It seemed that for every style I was a month too late. By the time I figured this out and moved on to the next style, I was behind again. It happened with the Swatch watches and with the rolled up jeans. Funny looking back on it, I realize that my interests academically and athletically were already taking the majority of my attention. That is probably why I was one of the kids who was singled out for "special" locker room treatment!! Despite my focus, the thread that still weaved throughout this period for me and all my classmates was the making of our identity.

Decorating Kid Rooms Helps Them Form Identity

So how can decorating kid rooms relate to your child's developing identity? I believe it plays a huge role. I believe this is the period when children will want to take a primary role in defining the way their room is decorated. Up to this point; thru the baby, toddler, and child phase, you the parent probably took the lead and defined how your child's room was decorated. You should still remain active, but during this phase your kid will want and needs to take a more active role in decorating their bedroom.

Kids' Interests are Most Likely Fixed

One idea to keep in mind, is that at this point in your child's life their interests will be nearly fixed. I talked briefly about the formation of a child's interests in the child wall murals page. So by this time, your kid will know if they like science, art, athletics, or animals. However, in addition to your child's interests, he or she will be wrestling with the latest fashion and style. Because of these sometimes competing interests, every kid decorating idea should incorporate both and it will be upto the parent and the kid to determine an appropriate mix. It is this teamwork that leads me to believe that decorating kid rooms can be a real opportunity for you as parents to draw close to your child during these tough years of junior high. Your involvement should not be measured in amount of control over your kid, instead you can begin to give your child some level of responsibility and autonomy as you work on their bedroom decor together.

Before we plunge into some specific ideas for decorating kid rooms with wall murals, I would recommend you do an inventory of your child's interests and also try to determine what fashions and styles are cool at this time to your kid. To help with this, I will give you a general starter list.

Combining a Kid's Interests and Style Into their Room Decor

Hopefully looking over the lists has helped you think a little about your kids interests and the latest fashions and styles. Why is this distinction so important with regard to decorating kid rooms? Simply because interests will be consistent, while fashions and styles by their very nature will change sometimes almost overnight!! When decorating kid rooms, the difference between a child's interests and style should be a key deciding factor on what decorating idea you both select. I believe the types of wall decor available can and should be the cornerstone of your kids bedroom decor, because some of the types, like custom murals, are permanent while others, like posters, are easily interchanged and cost a fraction of custom work. So let's take a look at some ideas. As always atHome Murals would love to hear your ideas and successes as it relates to combining your kids interests and the styles and fashions of the day.

Ideas for Decorating Kid Rooms with Kid Wall Murals

Decorating Kid Room Theme with Murals Idea #1

Personally I love sports themes for kids rooms in this age range. Your kid will know what sport they really enjoy and will probably be dreaming about playing the game even when they are at home. The theme also works great for either boys or girls. So why not encourage them to dream about their favorite sports! There are three ideas I would recommend implementing with a sports theme.

  1. A Custom Wall Mural of Their Favorite Sport
Fill the majority of a wall with a wall mural of their favorite game. There are a number of images you may select from in our online gallery. A fun alternative is to photograph your child playing in a game and utilize one of those images in a custom wallpaper mural. However, for the central image of the room I recommend a more general image that shows the game at a college or professional level. Kids and teenagers all love to dream about performing at the next level. If the central image is of them performing, they will quickly outgrow that image. It will be fun to have the image for their scrapbook, but not to push them forward to the next level of competition.

  2. Posters of their favorite athletic teams and players.
Allow them to pick out posters of their favorite teams and players. This portion of the wall decor would be considered more of the style wall. The players they follow may change from year to year, so it is nice to allow them to decor with a medium, in this case posters, that can easily be changed while the central mural image remains the same.

  3. Create a "scrapbook" wall
Help them as they are competing to keep track of great performances by pinning up awards, pictures, newspaper clippings, or other items that help them remember good memories associated with their great games. At the end of each season, help them archive most of the items in a scrap book. Keep up several highlight items from the season to help them track their improvement over the years.

What is great about this idea is it can be applied to interests other then sports. For instance, if your son is an avid fisherman, help him create a fishermans dream room with a fishing mural and a scrap book wall of his big catches! Any activity your child is activily involved with can take advantage of the mural, posters, and scrapbook wall decor idea.

Decorating Kid Room Theme with Murals Idea #2

Do you have a son or daughter that loves music, singing, or theatre? Do they dream of performing on broadway? Apply the murals, posters, scrapbooking organization to their room. Create a wall that creates the illusion of a stage overlooking a broadway audience. If you need help with that, let us know we can help you find a muralist. On the poster wall, let your child pick out posters of the latest broadway shows, musicals, and actors. Complete the room with a scrapbook wall that chronicles their recitals, performances, and shows they attended. Strive to find opportunities for them to be photographed with performers at different stages. As in the previous idea, help them compile the scrapbook wall at different times into an actual scrapbook leaving the highlights on the wall.
