Nursery Room Decorating with Murals

A Baby Nursery Room Theme with Murals

First, let me start by saying congratulations on the new addition to your family! If you're simply planning for later events, consider the congratualations an early deposit in the praise you will receive. A new baby is truly a special event.

Second, let me address the question that may arise. What is the difference between your baby murals section and this section? Honestly, there is little difference except the context. One amazing thing about the use of the internet is some folks may think to look for baby room decorating ideas, others may think to look for nursery decorating ideas. In either case, atHome Murals hopes to be found by both.

My Definition of a Baby Nursery

Sorry to be so category-driven in this portion of the site, but as I designed this site I wanted to give thought to how our children develop. With that in mind, I have categorized this section for infants which I consider to be newborns up to age three. I think you'll agree with me when I say a one or even two year old behaves much differently than a three or four year old. If you're currently living thru what is affectionaly called"the terrible two's", I can deeply sympathize. Remain hopeful, because yes, they will change, albeit too slowly for you the parent!

Dear Lord, Will My Two Year Old Ever Grow Up?

I can testify to this change thru the example of my nephew. While I was in college I had the privilege of living with my older brother and his wife for a short period of time. At the time my nephew was a wee lad of two. It was during my time with them that I discovered the meaning behind "the terrible twos". During this time, my nephew was fiercely exploring the limits of discipline and authority. My sister-in-law often muttered, "Dear Lord, Will My Two Year Old Ever Grow Up?". In particular, two areas of discipline seemed to allude him.

First was his desire for heights. If it was over his head, he would climb it. Despite all sane measures to prevent him from climbing, one day he did finally manage to climb undetected onto the counters in the kitchen. This climb led to an unfortunate conclusion, a fall back onto the hard floor. Thankfully in his case, the story ends well and he was uninjured except for a cartoon sized lump on his head. We are able to laugh about the incident today, but for many parents this can be your worst fear for good reason since some stories end not simply with a bump but with serious injury. At this stage they seem bound and determined to alude your discipline.

The second area of discipline that alluded my nephew during this time was potty training. I will never forget one of the nights I babysat my nephew. Because of an earlier incident with him, I was conscious of the fact that an "accident" was possible. That is, if you can define an accident as pulling your drawers down in the middle of the front yard to relieve yourself.

I was committed to not allowing such an act of complete disregard for authority to happen on my watch. So every half hour I would ask my nephew if he needed to use the potty. Eventually, as is the case with every small boy that drinks a bottle full of fluid, he got to the point were he said that he did have to use the potty. However, when I suggested that he use the little-big man's toilet that was special just for him, he quickly said no. Ah, the classic first word of a child's vocabulary!! Instead he requested a diaper. At this point I made a critical error, I began to reason with him.

Critical Error: Reasoning with a Two Year Old

I realize now that reasoning with a two year old who has a 200 or 300 word vocabulary is quite difficult, in fact impossible. So, that was doomed to failure and I eventually had to say no. At that instant, the discussion escalated from a mere conflict of words to a conflict of wills. I dared to place my will on him. Well, forget any chance of using the little-big man's toilet. For the next few minutes, but what seemed like an eternity, my nephew wailed and utilized the phrase "no" many times at a decibel level even a high end stereo could not match. To say I was myself upset, might be an understatement. My pact to keep my watch clean was quickly failing and worse yet I saw that I still had several hours to go. Needless to say, my nephew's drawers did come down, but not over his toydee (two year old speak for toilet) but over the living room floor. I was able to witness first hand one of the main reasons man invented hardwood flooring. It cleans up easily and well after "accidental" spills!!

God Answers Prayer

As I know some of you are waiting to hear, the Lord does answer prayers. My nephew today is a sweet, mild tempered eleven year old that I dare say any mother would love to have as a child. So as you can see from this fun illustration, the early stage of a child's life is one of rapid change.

In fact, the key development challenges a parent must consider during this time are infants establishing trust with their surroundings and a toddler managing their journey to learn the beginnings of self-control. An informative site that discusses this from a psychology view can be found at this link.

So how does this relate to nursery baby room decorating and different nursery themes? First, consider the trust factor. Can you create a nursery theme that is warm and will sooth your infant? Can you create a nursery theme that soothes mother? If so, we have a winner nursery decorating idea!! Additionaly, we would like a nursery theme that will also stand the tumultous waters of toddlerhood. My simple, untested theory is that if a room's soothing images help the infant establish trust, it will also be effective during toddlerhood. So with that in mind lets take a look at a nursery theme or two that focuses on wall murals. I hope you find some good baby room decorating ideas with wall murals.
